Welcome to new subscribers

A personal welcome to our 27 new subscribers since last month's issue. If there is a topic you want to hear about or if you want to publish an article as a guest author drop me an email.

What is 3D?

A QT subscriber wrote to me last week and asked "A customer mentioned a term I never heard - '3D'. I know what 8D and 5Y are. Is 3D another problem solving method?"

I couldn't be exactly sure what the customer was referring to since I wasn't involved in the conversation. I asked the subscriber about what the main topic of the conversation was and it was "Lean Manufacturing."

My answer is: 3D for Lean refers to "dirty, difficult and dangerous" I think the subscriber was greatly relieved that another problem solving scheme wasn't on the horizon.

The question did start me thinking about all the terms used in and with Lean Manufacturing that start with a number. Here's the list I have so far:

> 0 inventory
> 0 defects
> 0 accidents
> 1 piece flow (single piece flow)
> 1 point lesson
> 2 bin system
> 2 point control (AB control, full work control)
> 3D
> 3 don'ts of assembly
> 3 don'ts of quality
> 3 elements of standard work
> 3 elements of JIT
> 3G (genchi, genbutsu, genjitsu)
> 3P (production, preparation, process)
> 3 tei (set location, set quantity, set timing)
> 4M (man, material, machine, method)

> 5L (lacking, loose, leaks, looks & 'lectrical)
> 5S (sort, straighten, scrub, standardize, sustain)
> 5W2H
> 5Y
> 6 Big Losses
> 6 Sigma
> 7 New Tools
> 7 Steps of Autonomous Maintenance
> 7 Wastes
> 8 Wastes
> 7 Ways/Alternatives

What did I miss?

Reply to this email and let me know what I missed. I'll post the additions in the QT archives with full credit to the contributor. Or, drop me a line about any of the terms listed in this article.
