ISO 9000

  ISO 9000 refers to the family of documents controlled by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in Geneva, Switzerland. This standard is among ISO's most widely known standards ever. Nearly 900,000 organizations in 161 countries have certified to the standard. It has become an international reference for quality management requirements in business-to-business dealings.

The ISO 9000 family is focused "quality management". This means what the organization does to fulfill:

· the customer's quality requirements, and

· applicable regulatory requirements, while aiming to

· enhance customer satisfaction, and

· achieve continual improvement of its performance in pursuit of these objectives.

The ISO 9000 document doesn't contain any requirements. It is just description of what a fundamental quality management system should be, as well as including the vocabulary used in the standard.

Since it is an international standard, and words can have different meanings in different languages, it is necessary to define the words to have a common meaning.

The most recent edition of ISO 9000 is dated 2005 and is version (E). This is a crucial document for companies to read and understand. It is especially important for top management because it clearly sets forth the focus and intent of the ISO 9000 requirements.
